World Surf League Returns to India with Shore Temple Classic QS 2000 and Historic Pro Junior Event

The World Surf League (WSL) is set to make a landmark return to India as the Shore Temple Classic QS 2000 and Pro Junior heads to Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, from August 12 to 16, 2026. 

More than just the second edition of a WSL event in the country, this year's competition marks another historic milestone with India hosting its first-ever WSL Pro Junior event, providing young surfers with a direct pathway into elite international competition.

Following the successful debut of WSL competition in India in 2023, Mahabalipuram once again becomes the centre of Asian surfing as nearly 100 surfers from across the continent gather to compete on one of India's most iconic coastlines. The event combines the Qualifying Series (QS) 2000 and the Junior Qualifying Series (JQS), offering ranking points, international exposure and an opportunity for Indian surfers to compete against some of Asia's best without leaving home.

Located along the scenic coastline of Tamil Nadu, Mahabalipuram Beach has rapidly established itself as India's premier surfing destination. The competition venue sits beside the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shore Temple, where a long right-hand sandbar consistently produces waves ideally suited for high-performance surfing.

The wave offers a combination of long open-face sections, opportunities for progressive aerial manoeuvres and, under favourable swell conditions, occasional barrels that test every aspect of a surfer's skill. Having already hosted India's first-ever WSL event in 2023, Mahabalipuram returns to the international calendar with increased significance.

The proven quality of the venue, coupled with growing domestic interest in surfing, has positioned it as the natural home for India's biggest international surfing competitions.

While the return of the Qualifying Series is significant, the introduction of the Pro Junior competition represents perhaps the biggest development for Indian surfing. For the first time, young surfers in India will have the opportunity to compete in an official WSL Junior Qualifying Series event on home soil.

The addition creates an important development pathway for emerging athletes, allowing them to earn international ranking points while gaining valuable experience against established competitors from across Asia.

The event will feature four competitive divisions:

• Men's QS 2000: 64 surfers

• Women's QS 2000: 32 surfers

• Men's Pro Junior (JQS): 32 surfers

• Women's Pro Junior (JQS): 24 surfers

Approximately 100 international surfers from 12 countries across the Asia region are expected to participate, making it one of the largest international surfing events ever held in India.

World Surf League APAC Tour Director Ty Sorati highlighted the significance of returning to India after the successful inaugural event three years ago. According to Sorati, the response to the first WSL competition demonstrated both the passion for surfing in India and the country's long-term potential within the sport. He noted that combining the Qualifying Series with the country's first Pro Junior event creates an excellent opportunity for Indian surfers to compete alongside some of Asia's strongest athletes while continuing to build the sport domestically.

The WSL also acknowledged the support of its local partners in helping establish India as an emerging destination on the international surfing calendar.

The Surfing Federation of India views the Shore Temple Classic as much more than a standalone event. SFI President Arun Vasu described the 2023 WSL event as a historic breakthrough for Indian surfing and believes the addition of the QS 2000 and Pro Junior further strengthens the country's long-term development strategy.

Hosting international competitions on home soil gives Indian surfers a valuable opportunity to earn ranking points without the financial burden of travelling overseas, while simultaneously exposing them to the level of competition required to progress through the global surfing pathway.

The federation's ambitions extend even further. Its long-term objective is to host four additional WSL events across India, creating a structured pathway for Indian surfers to eventually qualify for the Challenger Series and ultimately the Championship Tour, the highest level of professional surfing.

Beyond athlete development, Vasu also emphasised the broader benefits of hosting international events, including increased coastal tourism, greater international recognition for India's surf destinations and inspiring more young people to take up the sport.

The continued growth of surfing in India has also been supported by government organisations.

The Shore Temple Classic is backed by both the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).

SDAT Member Secretary Thiru J. Meghanatha Reddy reiterated Tamil Nadu's commitment to developing surfing after becoming the first Indian state to host a World Surf League event in 2023. He highlighted Mahabalipuram's emergence as a world-class surfing destination and reaffirmed SDAT's commitment to providing Indian surfers with elite-level competition on home waves.

The Shore Temple Classic carries considerable importance within the World Surf League structure. Competitors earn valuable Asia Region ranking points, with the highest-ranked surfers progressing to the Challenger Series. From there, the world's best surfers earn opportunities to qualify for the prestigious Championship Tour, where they compete against the sport's global elite.

For India's young surfers, the introduction of the Pro Junior event creates an equally important stepping stone, allowing them to begin their international careers through structured WSL competition. Competition will run daily from 6:30 AM, subject to wave and ocean conditions, with the final schedule determined by the WSL Head Judge and Contest Director.

The return of the World Surf League represents another significant milestone in the evolution of Indian surfing. What began with the country's first WSL event in 2023 has quickly developed into a broader vision of establishing India as a regular destination on the international surfing calendar.

The addition of the inaugural Pro Junior competition further strengthens that ambition by investing directly in the next generation of surfers while giving them access to world-class competition without leaving home.
