Defending champions India will look to extend their dominance against South Korea on November 4 as Craig Fulton's side targets a sixth Asian Champions Trophy title. Japan and Malaysia meet in the other semi-final.

The Indian men's hockey team will take another step towards defending its title when it faces South Korea in the semi-final of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 on Wednesday, November 4, in Mohali.

India enter the knockout stage as the tournament's strongest team, having won all five of their league-stage matches to finish at the top of the standings with a perfect 15 points. The defending champions have scored 34 goals while conceding just five, underlining their dominance at both ends of the pitch.

The semi-final will be played at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali, with the tournament moving from Jalandhar, which hosted the league stage. India will be aiming to secure their sixth Asian Champions Trophy crown and further strengthen their position as the most successful team in the competition's history.

The semi-final presents an immediate rematch of Monday's league-stage encounter, in which India produced a commanding 8-0 victory over South Korea in Jalandhar. The result highlighted the gulf between the two sides on that occasion, with India's attacking unit finding multiple ways to penetrate the Korean defence.

India had also defeated South Korea 8-2 at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 in September, on their way to winning the gold medal. That victory was India's biggest against South Korea in Asian Games history.

However, the defending champions will be conscious that knockout hockey brings a different level of pressure. South Korea will have an opportunity to respond, and India cannot afford to approach the contest assuming that the previous results will automatically translate into another comfortable victory.

Chief coach Craig Fulton has already emphasised the importance of maintaining concentration. "The pressure will be different. We need a good start, that's going to be the key," Fulton said after India's league-stage victory over Korea.

The Indian team will look to retain the attacking structure and intensity that have characterised its campaign while ensuring that defensive discipline remains intact.

Harmanpreet Leads India's Goal-Scoring Charge

India's attacking strength has been one of the defining features of the tournament, with goals coming from across the forward line and the penalty-corner unit. Captain Harmanpreet Singh leads the tournament's scoring charts with nine goals, continuing to demonstrate his importance as India's primary drag-flicking threat.

Sukhjeet Singh and Dilpreet Singh have also been influential, scoring four goals each. Their contributions have ensured that India's attacking responsibility is not concentrated around a single player. Abhishek has added three goals to the team's tally, although he missed the final league match against South Korea due to injury. His availability for the semi-final will be an important consideration for the Indian management.

Among the other penalty-corner specialists, Jugraj Singh has scored three goals. This variety in India's attacking options makes them particularly difficult to contain. South Korea will need to limit India's penalty-corner opportunities, but the defending champions have also demonstrated their ability to score from open play.

Containing Harmanpreet's drag-flicks alone will not be enough. Korea must also find answers to India's movement, pace and combinations in the attacking third.

The first semi-final will feature Japan and Malaysia, with both teams looking to secure a place in the title match. Japan finished second in the league standings with 10 points, while Malaysia secured third position with nine points.

Japan's 2-1 victory over Malaysia on the final day of the league stage proved decisive in determining their respective positions. Malaysia, however, possesses considerable attacking quality. Abu Kamal Azrai has scored five goals in the tournament, while Anuar Akhimullah has contributed four.

Japan will need to remain organised defensively to restrict the Malaysian forwards, particularly given the narrow margin between the two teams in their previous encounter. The winner will advance to face either India or South Korea in the final.

Classification Match and Full Schedule

The fifth-sixth place classification match will see China take on Bangladesh. China enter the contest as favourites, but a victory for Bangladesh would provide a significant boost to hockey in the country.

Wednesday's schedule (November 4):

  • 2:00 PM IST: China vs Bangladesh (Fifth-sixth place match)

  • 4:30 PM IST: Japan vs Malaysia (Semi-final 1)

  • 7:00 PM IST: India vs South Korea (Semi-final 2)

All matches will be played at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.

Fans can watch the India-South Korea semi-final live on Star Sports 2, while online streaming will be available on JioHotstar. Entry to the stadium is free for spectators. Fans can register through the Ticketgenie website or mobile application to attend the matches.

For India, the immediate objective is straightforward: carry the unbeaten league-stage momentum into the knockout rounds and take one step closer to another Asian Champions Trophy title. With nine goals from Harmanpreet, strong contributions from the forward line and a defence that has conceded just five goals in five matches, the defending champions have built an impressive foundation.

But as Craig Fulton has stressed, the semi-final is a fresh contest. South Korea will be looking for a response, and India will need another disciplined performance to book their place in the November 6 final.
