The Indian men’s football team endured another difficult evening on the international stage, suffering a 1-3 defeat to Tajikistan in the first of two FIFA international friendlies at the TALCO Arena in Tursunzoda on Friday.

Goals from Sheriddin Boboev, Mekhrubon Karimov and Ehsoni Panshanbe secured a comfortable victory for the hosts, while Farukh Choudhary scored a late consolation goal for India. The match also witnessed three international debuts for the Blue Tigers, with Pramveer, Albino Gomes and Parthib Gogoi all earning their first senior caps.

Coming into the game after defeats against Jamaica and Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup, India were hoping to produce a positive response under head coach Khalid Jamil. Instead, familiar problems resurfaced as defensive lapses, a lack of creativity in midfield and missed chances once again proved costly.

Tajikistan made the ideal start and took the lead inside the opening ten minutes. In the ninth minute, midfielder Macarton Nickson conceded a penalty after a challenge inside the box. Sheriddin Boboev stepped up confidently and blasted his spot-kick into the roof of the net, sending captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu the wrong way to give the hosts an early advantage.

The goal immediately put India on the back foot and forced them to chase the game.

Despite the setback, India managed to create a few promising attacking moments during the first half. Edmund Lalrindika almost produced a spectacular equaliser when he attempted an audacious bicycle kick from a loose ball inside the penalty area. However, the effort failed to trouble the goalkeeper and inadvertently caught Tajik defender Mekhrubon Karimov in the face.

Moments later, India threatened again through a long throw-in from Rahul Bheke. Sandesh Jhingan challenged for the aerial ball before it fell kindly for Lallianzuala Chhangte inside the box. The winger turned sharply and unleashed a shot, but Tajik goalkeeper Rustam Yatimov reacted well to push the effort away for a corner.

While India showed flashes of attacking intent, the front three of Edmund Lalrindika, Chhangte and Vikram Partap Singh often found themselves isolated. The midfield struggled to provide support, leaving the forwards disconnected from the rest of the team.

India’s best opportunity of the first half arrived in the 39th minute. Akash Mishra delivered an excellent cross from the left flank, and Edmund rose above the defence to power a header towards goal. The effort beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar, denying India a deserved equaliser.

Just two minutes later, Akash again created danger with another pinpoint delivery into the box. This time Chhangte connected with a header, but his effort was directed straight at Yatimov.

Those missed chances proved expensive.

Tajikistan emerged from the break looking more composed and dangerous. India continued to struggle with defensive organisation and failed to gain control of possession.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 62nd minute through Mekhrubon Karimov. A well-delivered free-kick into the penalty area exposed India’s defensive vulnerabilities, allowing Karimov to rise highest and guide a header past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

Before India could recover, Tajikistan struck again.

Just six minutes later, Alijon Karomatullozoda burst down the right flank and delivered a low cross into the six-yard box. Ehsoni Panshanbe timed his run perfectly, arriving unmarked to slot home from close range and make it 3-0.

The third goal effectively ended the contest.

Recognising the need for change, Khalid Jamil introduced Farukh Choudhary, Mohammad Sanan and Nikhil Barla in a triple substitution during the 69th minute. The changes injected some energy into India’s attack, but the damage had already been done.

The match also provided valuable milestones for several players. Defender Bijoy Varghese earned only his second international appearance after replacing Sandesh Jhingan. Pramveer made his senior international debut when he came on for Rahul Bheke in the closing stages.

Goalkeeper Albino Gomes also received his first senior India cap after replacing Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in the 82nd minute. Two minutes later, NorthEast United forward Parthib Gogoi was handed his international debut when he entered the field in place of Jeakson Singh Thounaojam.

India eventually found a consolation goal in the 89th minute. Edmund Lalrindika won a free-kick just outside the penalty area after a determined run. Farukh Choudhary stepped up and produced a clever low finish into the bottom-left corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

The goal was Farukh’s third in Indian colours and provided one of the few positives from an otherwise disappointing evening.

However, it did little to alter the outcome as Tajikistan comfortably secured a 3-1 victory.

The defeat continues a worrying run for India, who have now suffered three consecutive losses following defeats to Jamaica and Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup. Under Khalid Jamil, pressure continues to mount as the team struggles to find consistency and positive results on the international stage.

The Blue Tigers will have an opportunity to respond quickly when they face Tajikistan again at the Hisor Central Stadium on June 9. India will need significant improvement in both attack and defence if they are to avoid another disappointing result and regain confidence ahead of future international assignments.
