The 2026–27 Indian Football League begins with Real Kashmir hosting debutants Nagaland United in Srinagar as the competition returns to a full-season format.

The 2026–27 campaign begins in Srinagar with the Snow Leopards looking to build on last season’s late revival, while Nagaland United prepare to make history with their first appearance in the national league.

The Indian Football League (IFL) returns with a full-season home-and-away format for the 2026–27 campaign, bringing renewed significance to the competition as clubs prepare for a longer league schedule.

The opening fixture will carry a historic dimension as Real Kashmir FC host debutants Nagaland United SC at the TRC Stadium in Srinagar on Friday, October 30. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 PM IST.

For Real Kashmir, the season opener offers an opportunity to build on the momentum they generated towards the end of the previous campaign. For Nagaland United, it marks the beginning of an unprecedented journey: their first-ever appearance in the Indian Football League, just two years after the club was founded.

The Snow Leopards had a difficult start to the 2025–26 season, finishing in the lower half of the initial league standings and entering the relegation phase. However, under head coach Ishfaq Ahmed, the team produced a strong response when it mattered most.

Real Kashmir registered three consecutive victories during the relegation phase, including a convincing 3-0 win over Gokulam Kerala FC and a 2-1 victory against Aizawl FC. Those results helped them finish the phase at the top with 14 points and secure their place in the league for another season.

Ishfaq will once again lead the side and believes his team is prepared for the challenge posed by the newcomers, even though Nagaland United's tactical approach remains relatively unfamiliar.

“The players are the same ones who were at Aizawl FC, so we know most of them, but a completely new coach has taken over with a new style. Personally, I don't have any idea how they will set up, but we are prepared. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter; we want to play good, aggressive football at home, and we are ready for that,” he said.

Real Kashmir will, however, begin the campaign without their previous captain Mohammad Inam, who has moved to Indian Super League side Punjab FC. The club has strengthened its attacking options with the addition of experienced striker Marcus Joseph, alongside several promising domestic players.

Defender N. Rohen Singh expressed confidence in the team's preparation ahead of the opener. “We have prepared very well together, both the players and the coaching staff, for tomorrow's match. It is our first match of the season, and we hope to get the win,” he said.

Nagaland United's historic entry into national football

While Real Kashmir are seeking continuity, Nagaland United arrive with a much larger milestone in sight. Founded in 2024 in Chümoukedima, Dimapur, the club will enter the IFL only two years after its establishment.

Their participation marks a significant moment for Nagaland, which has waited 78 years for representation in the competition. The state also holds a special place in Indian sporting history through Dr Talimeren Ao, independent India's first captain.

Nagaland United's entry was facilitated through a goodwill agreement with Aizawl FC, which received approval from the All India Football Federation on September 9, 2026. Under the arrangement, the Nagaland club acquired Aizawl's sporting rights for the league.

The club has appointed young coach Kaizad Ambapardiwalla to lead its campaign. He previously served as head coach of Jamshedpur FC during their quarter-final run in the Durand Cup 2026, which was the club's final outing.

Nagaland United are expected to build around a young squad featuring local players, with the campaign offering an important platform for emerging footballers from the region.

Ambapardiwalla acknowledged the limited preparation time but insisted that his side would approach the season with competitive intent.

“Our preparation for tomorrow’s game is going well, and the team is in a positive mindset. We are focused on building a strong, competitive team for the season. Despite having limited time, our main focus during training has been on discipline, the right attitude and developing a winning mentality,” he said.

He also made it clear that Nagaland United do not intend to treat their debut season as merely a learning experience.

“Real Kashmir FC are an experienced side, but our players are well prepared. We have trained well over the past week and have a clear plan for the game. There is a strong belief within the team that we can secure three points and put in a good performance. Nagaland United have not come to the Indian Football League just to participate; we are here to compete and win,” he added.

A new chapter for Nagaland football

Defender Rohmingthanga, who previously represented Aizawl FC in the I-League, will lead Nagaland United. He underlined the importance of making the club's first campaign memorable for its supporters.

“As this is our first-ever IFL campaign, we want to make it special for our supporters, especially the people of Nagaland. We will give everything on the pitch and fight for the win. To all our supporters, thank you for standing behind us. We will do our best to deliver a good result and make history together,” he said.

The return of a full home-and-away format adds another dimension to the season, with clubs set to experience a longer campaign and the demands of sustained performance. For Real Kashmir, the immediate objective will be to establish themselves early and make the most of home advantage. Nagaland United, meanwhile, will look to turn the excitement surrounding their debut into a competitive start.

The opening match in Srinagar therefore brings together two clubs at different stages of their journeys, but with the same immediate ambition: to begin the 2026–27 Indian Football League with three points.
