PV Sindhu has qualified for the BWF World Tour Finals 2026 in Hangzhou, returning to the season-ending tournament for the first time since 2021 after winning the Japan Open and Hylo Open.

The two-time Olympic medallist has secured her sixth career appearance at the season-ending tournament following a strong 2026 campaign, highlighted by titles at the Japan Open and Hylo Open and a runner-up finish at the French Open.

India's PV Sindhu has qualified for the 2026 BWF World Tour Finals, marking her return to badminton's prestigious season-ending tournament for the first time since 2021. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed the 31-year-old's qualification on Wednesday, rewarding a season in which the Indian has rediscovered her winning form and returned to the top six of the world rankings.

The World Tour Finals will be held in Hangzhou, China, from December 9 to 13. Sindhu's qualification will mark her sixth appearance at the tournament, where only the leading performers across the BWF World Tour season earn a place.

For Indian badminton, the confirmation is another significant milestone in Sindhu's comeback season. After dealing with injury setbacks and spending time away from her best form, she has produced a series of strong results in 2026 to establish herself among the leading players on the women's singles circuit once again.

Sindhu's qualification has been built on a productive run of performances throughout 2026. She won the Japan Open earlier in the season before adding the Hylo Open title in Germany last week. Between those victories, she also reached the final of the French Open, finishing runner-up. The results have helped her climb to World No. 6, her highest ranking since 2022.

The progress is particularly encouraging considering that a year ago Sindhu was sidelined by a foot injury. Her return to consistent competition and the ability to challenge for titles against leading international opponents have been defining features of her season.

The Hylo Open victory proved especially important in the qualification race. Winning the tournament in Germany strengthened her position among the season's leading performers and helped secure her place in Hangzhou.

Sindhu is now expected to turn her attention to the Syed Modi International, scheduled to begin on November 24 in Lucknow, as she looks to maintain her momentum ahead of the year-end tournament.

First appearance since 2021

While this will be Sindhu's sixth career appearance at the World Tour Finals, it will be her first since 2021. She had also qualified for the 2022 edition but was forced to withdraw because of an injury. Consequently, her return to the competition carries added significance, particularly after several seasons in which fitness and consistency presented challenges.

The World Tour Finals bring together the best performers of the season, making qualification an important measure of sustained performance across the international calendar. For Sindhu, reaching the tournament again demonstrates the progress she has made during a season of resurgence.

She will also be looking to draw on her previous experience at the event. Sindhu remains the only Indian to have won the women's singles title at the BWF World Tour Finals, having claimed the championship in 2018. In that final, she defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara to become the first Indian women's singles player to lift the prestigious year-end trophy.

Sindhu is among the first players to have confirmed their places in the 2026 women's singles field. South Korea's An Se-young, Japan's Akane Yamaguchi, and China's Wang Zhi Yi and Chen Yu Fei have also secured qualification.

The presence of several established names underlines the quality of competition expected in Hangzhou. An Se-young has been a dominant force in women's singles, while Yamaguchi and China's leading players bring considerable experience at the highest level.

For Sindhu, the challenge will be to carry her recent form into December and compete against the best players of the season. Her experience in major tournaments, combined with the confidence gained from winning two titles this year, gives her a strong platform heading into the event.

The Indian will also have the opportunity to add another chapter to her record at the competition. Having already won the title in 2018, she knows what it takes to succeed at the year-end showpiece.

Sindhu's qualification is more than just another tournament entry. It reflects a significant turnaround in a season that has seen her return to winning ways after injury-related interruptions.

The Japan Open and Hylo Open titles, the French Open final and her rise to World No. 6 collectively underline the consistency she has brought back to her game. With the Syed Modi International coming up before the December event, Sindhu still has an opportunity to sharpen her form and build further confidence.

Her return to the World Tour Finals also offers Indian badminton a strong presence at one of the sport's most exclusive competitions. As the only Indian woman to have won the women's singles title, Sindhu will arrive in Hangzhou with both experience and a history of success at the tournament.

Five years after her last appearance, the two-time Olympic medallist is back among the season's elite. For Sindhu, the objective now will be to turn another qualification milestone into a serious challenge for the title.
