Indian women’s tennis witnessed another memorable day at the ITF W15 New Delhi tournament as Shruti Ahlawat produced a gritty straight-sets win over top seed Zeel Desai to book her place in the semifinals.

The 19-year-old Indian defeated the vastly more experienced Zeel 6-4, 6-4 in a contest filled with momentum swings, resilience, and composure under pressure. With the victory, Shruti advanced to the last four where she will now face 14-year-old sensation Jensi Dipakbhai Kanabar in what promises to be one of the most exciting all-Indian semifinal clashes on the domestic circuit this year.

The quarterfinal between Shruti and Zeel was far from straightforward.

Facing the tournament’s top seed and one of India’s most experienced players on the ITF circuit, Shruti endured a difficult start and quickly found herself trailing 1-4 in the opening set. Zeel appeared in control early on, using her consistency from the baseline to force errors and dictate rallies. However, Shruti refused to panic.

The youngster gradually settled into the contest, began timing her groundstrokes better, and started pushing Zeel deeper behind the baseline. What followed was a remarkable turnaround as Shruti reeled off five consecutive games to take the first set 6-4. The comeback highlighted not only her fighting spirit but also the growing confidence she has carried into recent tournaments.

The second set proved equally dramatic.

Shruti once again appeared on course for a comfortable finish after building a commanding 5-1 lead. But Zeel, known for her experience and resilience, fought back strongly to win three successive games and reduce the deficit to 5-4, threatening another momentum shift. At that stage, the pressure firmly rested on Shruti.

Yet, the teenager displayed remarkable maturity for her age. Instead of allowing the match to drift into a tense closing phase, she produced one final composed game on Zeel’s serve to seal the match 6-4, 6-4 and complete one of the biggest wins of her career. The victory over World No. 530 Zeel Desai represents another important milestone in Shruti’s rapidly progressing journey on the professional circuit.

Coming into the tournament, Shruti had already shown encouraging signs of form in recent weeks. Earlier this month, she reached the semifinals of the ITF W15 Panipat event, where she registered the biggest win of her career by ranking after upsetting top seed Vaidehee Chaudhari in the quarterfinals. Although her Panipat campaign ended in the semifinals against Japan’s Michika Ozeki, the performances demonstrated her growing confidence at the professional level.

Now in New Delhi, Shruti has taken another significant step forward. Her Round of 16 victory over fellow Indian Haniya Sadiq also underlined her ability to handle pressure moments, as she closed out the match 6-3, 7-6(4).

The tournament overall has become a showcase for emerging Indian talent.

Alongside Shruti, the remarkable run of 14-year-old Jensi Kanabar has grabbed national attention. Jensi recently became the youngest Indian female player ever to reach the semifinals of a professional singles event, breaking a 25-year-old record previously held by Sania Mirza. The teenager from Junagadh has played fearless tennis throughout the week, defeating higher-ranked and older opponents with remarkable composure.

That sets up a fascinating semifinal between two of India’s brightest young prospects.

While Jensi has captured headlines because of her age and record-breaking achievements, Shruti arrives into the contest carrying significant momentum and valuable experience from recent ITF events. Stylistically too, the matchup promises to be intriguing.

Shruti’s game relies heavily on her ability to absorb pace, extend rallies, and stay tactically disciplined during long exchanges. Against Zeel, she repeatedly showed the mental strength required to recover from difficult positions. Jensi, meanwhile, has impressed with her fearless attacking approach and willingness to take initiative against experienced opponents.

For Indian tennis, the emergence of multiple young players performing strongly at the professional level is an encouraging sign. The women’s circuit in India has long searched for depth beyond a handful of established names. Tournaments like the ITF W15 New Delhi are now providing younger players with opportunities to gain ranking points, build confidence, and compete against international opposition.

The presence of several Indian players deep into the tournament also reflects the improving standards within the domestic system. Qualifier Aditi Rawat’s run to the quarterfinals further strengthened India’s representation this week, while Zeel Desai’s consistency on the circuit continues to provide an important benchmark for younger players.

But on this occasion, the spotlight belonged to Shruti Ahlawat.

Her ability to recover from difficult situations in both sets against a higher-ranked opponent showed impressive maturity. More importantly, it demonstrated that she is learning how to manage momentum swings one of the key traits required to succeed consistently at professional level. Now, another major test awaits. Against Jensi Kanabar, Shruti will step into a semifinal carrying both confidence and opportunity, knowing a place in the final of an ITF professional event is within reach.

And regardless of who progresses, Indian women’s tennis will certainly have another young name to celebrate by the end of the week.
