Indian tennis players Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale produced an impressive run at the ITF W50 Elvas in Portugal, finishing as runners-up in the women's doubles competition after a week of consistent performances.

The Indian pairing displayed excellent teamwork and resilience throughout the tournament before falling 4-6, 3-6 to Australia's Elena Micic and China's Han Shi in the final. Although they narrowly missed out on the title, their performance underlined the growing strength of Indian women's doubles on the ITF World Tennis Tour. For Vaishnavi, the tournament also featured encouraging performances in the singles draw, where she reached the Round of 16 after an impressive opening-round victory before bowing out to former Japanese international Nao Hibino.

Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale entered the doubles event with confidence and quickly established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the draw. Receiving a first-round bye, the Indian duo began their campaign directly from the quarterfinals, where they faced the Portuguese-Russian combination of Madalena Matias and Miroslava Medvedeva.

The pair started strongly, dominating the opening set 6-0 with aggressive returning and consistent net play. Although their opponents mounted a stronger challenge in the second set, the Indians maintained composure to close out a 7-5 victory and secure a place in the semifinals.

The performance showcased their ability to combine attacking tennis with disciplined shot selection, an approach that would continue throughout the tournament.

The semifinals proved to be another demanding contest. Facing Lithuania's Iveta Dapkute and Kazakhstan's Sonja Zhiyenbayeva, the Indian duo encountered resistance after taking the opening set 6-3. Their opponents responded by claiming the second set 6-2, forcing the match into a deciding match tie-break.

With a place in the final at stake, Adkar and Bhosale raised their level significantly. They dominated the super tie-break 10-2, producing some of their best tennis of the week to seal a deserved place in the championship match. The victory highlighted one of the partnership's biggest strengths—the ability to remain calm under pressure and deliver in decisive moments.

The title match presented the toughest challenge of the week. Standing across the net were Australia's Elena Micic and China's Han Shi, who had also enjoyed an impressive run through the draw. The final was closely contested, particularly during the opening stages, but the Australian-Chinese pairing capitalised on key opportunities to take the first set 6-4.

Adkar and Bhosale attempted to fight back in the second set but found it difficult to create sustained pressure on their opponents' serve. Micic and Han maintained control to secure the second set 6-3 and lift the doubles trophy. Despite the defeat, reaching the final of a W50 tournament represents another significant achievement for the Indian pair and valuable progress in their doubles partnership.

Vaishnavi Adkar also enjoyed a positive week in the singles event. Ranked World No. 395, the Indian began her campaign with a hard-fought victory over Kazakhstan's Sonja Zhiyenbayeva, who was once ranked as high as World No. 15 in the junior rankings. After winning the opening set 6-2, Adkar briefly lost momentum as Zhiyenbayeva claimed the second set 6-4.

However, the Indian responded strongly in the decider, raising her intensity to seal a convincing 6-2 victory and progress to the Round of 16.

The result demonstrated her growing maturity and ability to recover after setbacks during matches.

Adkar's reward for reaching the Round of 16 was a meeting with sixth seed Nao Hibino of Japan. Currently ranked World No. 246, Hibino brought significant experience into the contest, having previously competed regularly on the WTA Tour. Adkar made an outstanding start, taking the opening set 6-3 with confident baseline play and aggressive shot-making.

However, Hibino gradually asserted her experience and tactical awareness. The Japanese player dominated the next two sets, 6-1, 6-1, to complete the comeback and advance to the quarterfinals.

While the defeat ended Adkar's singles campaign, taking a set off a higher-ranked and experienced opponent offered another encouraging sign of her progress.

The performances in Portugal continue an encouraging period for Indian women's tennis on the ITF circuit. Rutuja Bhosale has consistently established herself as one of India's strongest doubles players, while Vaishnavi Adkar continues to make steady progress in both singles and doubles competition. Their run to the final at the W50 level demonstrates that Indian players are increasingly capable of competing deep into international tournaments against experienced opposition.

Performances like these also provide valuable WTA ranking points and confidence ahead of upcoming tournaments.

Although the title narrowly slipped away, the ITF W50 Elvas will be remembered as another productive week for both players. For Rutuja Bhosale, the runner-up finish adds another strong doubles result to her growing résumé, while Vaishnavi Adkar leaves Portugal with positive performances in both singles and doubles.

The chemistry displayed by the Indian pair throughout the tournament suggests they have the potential to become a regular force on the ITF circuit.

As they continue their European campaign, both players will look to build on the momentum gained in Elvas and convert deep tournament runs into titles. If their performances in Portugal are any indication, more podium finishes and significant results could be on the horizon for the Indian duo.
