The 800m races at the 65th National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar produced a series of encouraging performances for Indian middle-distance running, with three women and two men achieving the qualification standard for the 2026 Asian Games.

Leading the way in the women's event was Tamil Nadu's Gowthami Jayaraman, who claimed gold in 2:04.17, while Pooja of Haryana and Lili Das of Uttarakhand also dipped below the qualification mark of 2:05.21. In the men's competition, national record holder Mohammed Afsal and Asian Championships medallist Krishan Kumar reaffirmed their credentials with strong performances after already securing qualification during the heats.

Gowthami Jayaraman emerged as the standout performer in the women's final, producing a composed race to win the title in 2:04.17.

Her timing comfortably bettered the Asian Games qualification standard of 2:05.21, ensuring her place among India's leading contenders for the continental event. The performance highlighted her tactical maturity, as she maintained her pace over the closing stages to secure victory against a competitive field.

Winning the national title while simultaneously booking qualification represents a major milestone in Gowthami's career and strengthens India's options in women's middle-distance running.

Joining Gowthami in achieving the qualifying standard were Pooja and experienced campaigner Lili Das. Pooja finished second with an impressive 2:04.37, comfortably inside the qualification mark and underlining her continued progress at the senior level. The Haryana athlete demonstrated excellent finishing speed to secure the silver medal while guaranteeing herself a place in contention for the Asian Games squad.

Lili Das completed an exceptional day for Indian athletics by clocking 2:04.59 to finish third. Her performance also remained well within the required qualification standard, making it three Indian women under the benchmark in the same final.

The trio's performances reflect the growing depth in Indian women's 800m running and provide selectors with multiple high-quality options ahead of the continental championships.

While the top three secured qualification, several other athletes also delivered noteworthy performances.

Priscilla Daniel of Kerala finished fourth in 2:05.35, narrowly missing the qualification standard by just over a tenth of a second. Prateeksha Yadav followed in fifth with 2:05.76, while Huidrom Devi, Thota Sankeertana and Preeti Yadav rounded out the finalists.

The close margins across the field indicate increasing competitiveness in Indian women's middle-distance events, with several athletes now approaching international qualifying standards.

In the men's 800m, Mohammed Afsal once again demonstrated why he remains India's leading two-lap runner. The national record holder crossed the line in 1:48.57, comfortably under the Asian Games qualification mark and continuing a run of consistent performances at major domestic competitions. Afsal had already achieved the qualifying standard during the heats, but his effort in the final further reinforced his readiness for international competition.

Known for his tactical awareness and strong finishing kick, Afsal will once again carry India's hopes in one of athletics' most competitive middle-distance events.

Asian Championships medallist Krishan Kumar also delivered a solid performance by clocking 1:48.82, comfortably inside the qualification standard. Like Afsal, Krishan had already secured qualification in the preliminary round but used the final to underline his excellent form and consistency.

His ability to repeatedly run below the required standard provides confidence that he can challenge strongly on the continental stage and contribute significantly to India's middle-distance programme.

The performances in Bhubaneswar represent a significant boost for Indian athletics, particularly in the 800m events where depth has steadily improved over recent seasons. Having three women qualify in a single final is an encouraging sign, suggesting that the country's women's middle-distance programme is producing multiple athletes capable of competing at the highest level in Asia.

Similarly, the consistency shown by Mohammed Afsal and Krishan Kumar reinforces India's strength in the men's event, with both athletes demonstrating the ability to deliver qualification-worthy performances across multiple rounds.

As preparations continue for the 2026 Asian Games, the Interstate Athletics Championships have once again served as an important proving ground for India's top talent. With Gowthami Jayaraman, Pooja, Lili Das, Mohammed Afsal and Krishan Kumar all achieving the required standards, Indian middle-distance running heads into the continental season with growing confidence and genuine medal aspirations.
