India Women defeated England Women by 38 runs in the first T20I at Chelmsford after brilliant half-centuries from Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues and a superb debut from Nandni Sharma.

India Women produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat England by 38 runs in the opening match of the three-match T20I series at the County Ground in Chelmsford on Thursday.

After recovering from a disastrous start with the bat, the visitors posted a challenging total before debutant Nandni Sharma starred with the ball to help India take a 1-0 lead in the series. The victory was built around a remarkable partnership between Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues, followed by disciplined bowling that prevented England from mounting a serious challenge in the chase.

The match could hardly have begun worse for India. England captain Heather Knight won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that appeared fully justified after Lauren Bell struck twice in the opening over. Smriti Mandhana was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings, while Shafali Verma followed five deliveries later.

At 7/2 after one over, India looked in danger of collapsing. Instead, Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues produced one of the finest rescue acts in recent Indian women's T20 cricket. The pair immediately counterattacked, refusing to allow England's bowlers to settle. Boundaries flowed freely, and the momentum shifted dramatically. A particularly expensive over from Issy Wong yielded 27 runs as India seized control of the contest.

Their aggressive approach helped India register 73 runs in the Powerplay, the highest Powerplay score in the history of Indian women's T20 internationals.

The total surpassed India's previous best Powerplay score of 71 against South Africa in Lucknow in 2023 and underlined the fearless intent shown by the batting unit despite the early setbacks.

Having survived the early storm, Yastika and Jemimah continued to dominate proceedings. The duo stitched together a magnificent 126-run partnership for the third wicket, completely transforming India's innings. Yastika played the anchor's role superbly, mixing caution with aggression when required. She eventually reached her half-century before being run out for a well-made 50 off 40 deliveries.

Jemimah, meanwhile, looked fluent throughout her stay at the crease. Her strokeplay against both pace and spin kept England under pressure and ensured the scoring rate remained healthy. The Mumbai batter eventually fell for 69 from just 40 deliveries after being caught and bowled by Charlie Dean. By the time the partnership ended, India had laid the foundation for a substantial total.

India briefly lost momentum after the departures of Yastika and Jemimah. Richa Ghosh managed only four runs before falling to a sharp catch from Issy Wong, while Bharti Fulmali was clean bowled shortly afterwards. However, Deepti Sharma ensured India finished strongly.

The experienced all-rounder struck a valuable 22 from just 13 balls, adding crucial late runs that pushed the visitors to a competitive total of 188. While India narrowly missed the 200-run mark, the score represented an outstanding recovery from their precarious position after the first over.

England's chase began positively, but India never allowed the hosts to gain sustained momentum. Kranti Gaud provided the early breakthroughs, dismissing Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey to leave England under pressure. A partnership between Amy Jones and captain Heather Knight briefly revived England's hopes. The pair added 64 runs and kept the hosts within touching distance for much of the middle overs.

However, the required run rate continued to climb. Knight attempted to accelerate but found Jemimah Rodrigues in the deep off the bowling of N. Shree Charani.

That wicket proved to be a turning point. England's last realistic chance rested with Amy Jones, who played an impressive innings of 67 from 48 balls. But with 74 runs needed from the final five overs, risks became unavoidable. Debutant Nandni Sharma rose to the occasion brilliantly.

Jones attempted a big shot in the 16th over but found Shafali Verma at deep midwicket. On the very next ball, Nandni struck again as Dani Gibson also perished attempting an attacking stroke. The young Indian bowler finished with figures of 3/34 on debut, producing a memorable performance under pressure.

England never recovered from those setbacks and eventually finished on 150/8, handing India a comfortable 38-run victory.

The result gives India an early advantage in the three-match series and plenty of positives heading into the second T20I in Bristol on May 30. Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues demonstrated India's batting depth with their match-defining partnership, while the bowlers collectively delivered under pressure. Perhaps the biggest takeaway, however, was the performance of Nandni Sharma.

Making her international debut against a strong England side, the youngster displayed remarkable composure and provided the decisive breakthroughs when India needed them most.

For India, it was a near-perfect evening. A record-breaking Powerplay, a dominant batting display, a successful debutant and a convincing victory have put the Women in Blue firmly in control of the series as they look to continue their momentum in Bristol.
