India Storm Into Asian Games 2026 Women’s Cricket Semi-Finals After Eight-Wicket Win Over Japan

India have booked their place in the women’s cricket semi-finals at the Asian Games 2026 after producing a dominant eight-wicket victory over Japan in the quarter-final in Nagoya.

After restricting Japan to just 57 all out in 19.5 overs, India needed only five overs to chase down the target, finishing on 59/2 and completing a comfortable victory. The result sends India into the final four, where they will face Bangladesh in a repeat of the recent Women’s Asia Cup semi-final fixture.

The victory was built around a disciplined bowling performance, with India’s spinners taking control after Japan made a relatively steady start. Shree Charani was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 4/10, while India’s fielders also contributed with two run-outs during the Japanese innings.

Japan’s innings began cautiously, but India gradually tightened their grip on the quarter-final. The Japanese side reached 30/2 at the halfway stage, with Akari Nishimura Kano providing resistance at the top of the order. She eventually scored 25 off 47 balls, including two boundaries, before Shafali Verma ended her innings in the 15th over.

India’s spin attack then took complete control. Shree Charani proved particularly difficult to handle. After being introduced into the attack, the left-arm spinner struck twice in the space of two deliveries, including the wicket of Japan captain Mai Yanagida. She subsequently completed a four-wicket haul, finishing with 4/10.

Charani's spell also saw her bowl consecutive maiden overs as Japan struggled to find scoring opportunities against the Indian spin attack. India's fielding added further pressure. Two Japanese batters were run out in successive overs as Japan attempted to push the scoring rate. Smriti Mandhana produced a sharp throw from the deep to contribute to one of the dismissals, while Nandani Sharma was involved in the second.

By the end of the 20th over, Japan had been bowled out for 57, leaving India a target of 58.

Charani Creates Asian Games Record

Charani’s performance was particularly notable statistically. Her figures of 4/10 were confirmed as the joint-best bowling figures by a woman in Asian Games cricket, matching Sri Lanka’s Inoshi Fernando. At the same time, Charani’s figures became the best by an Indian woman in the history of the Asian Games, surpassing Pooja Vastrakar’s previous 4/17 from the 2022 edition.

The spell underlined the effectiveness of India's spin resources in conditions that offered assistance to slower bowlers. Deepti Sharma also entered the record books during the innings. Her wicket of Erika Oda made her the first Indian to take wickets in two different editions of the Asian Games.

Shafali Verma also contributed with the ball, taking two wickets, including the dismissal of Japan's leading scorer Kano.

With only 58 runs required, India’s chase was always expected to be short, but the team made sure there was little drama. Shafali Verma came out attacking from the first over, smashing four boundaries off the opening over. India raced to 17/0 after the first over, setting the tone for a rapid chase. Japan did manage to pick up two wickets. G Kamalini was dismissed for a duck, giving Japan its first-ever wicket against a full-member ICC side in women’s T20I cricket, before Bharti Fulmali was caught at cover.

But the wickets did little to alter the outcome.

Shafali continued to attack, clearing the boundary for the first six of the match. She and Richa Ghosh then finished the chase in emphatic fashion, with India reaching 59/2 in just five overs to seal an eight-wicket victory.

Bangladesh Await in the Semi-Final

The victory takes India into the semi-finals, where they will face Bangladesh. Pakistan and Sri Lanka will contest the other semi-final. For India, the win provides an ideal platform heading into the knockout stages. The team combined disciplined bowling, sharp fielding and an aggressive chase to end Japan’s campaign in comprehensive fashion. The performance also highlighted the depth within India’s squad. Charani’s four-wicket haul led the bowling effort, Deepti Sharma added an important wicket while making history, and Shafali Verma contributed with both bat and ball.

Most importantly, India avoided being drawn into a prolonged chase after their bowlers had reduced Japan to a modest total. The quarter-final was effectively settled through two contrasting phases: India's bowlers dismantled Japan’s batting resistance before the Indian openers and middle order completed the chase in only five overs.

Now, attention turns to Bangladesh and the semi-final. India have entered the final four of the Asian Games women’s cricket competition, and after an eight-wicket victory over Japan, they will carry considerable momentum into the next stage of the tournament.
