Indian triple jumper Selva Prabhu Thirumaran produced one of the standout performances of his young career by winning the triple jump title at the Big 12 Championships in the United States with a massive wind-assisted leap of 17.19m.

Representing Kansas State University in the NCAA circuit, the 2022 World U20 silver medallist delivered a sensational series during the competition, also registering another huge jump of 16.90m under windy conditions. Although the 17.19m mark will not count as an official personal best due to the excessive tailwind of +4.6 m/s, the performance still underlined Selva’s growing consistency at the elite collegiate level and further strengthened his reputation as one of India’s most promising horizontal jump athletes.

The Big 12 Championships remain one of the most competitive conference meets in American collegiate athletics, regularly featuring athletes who later progress to world-level competition. For Selva, winning the title against a strong NCAA field marks another important milestone in his development.

The Indian athlete entered the competition already carrying strong form after earlier performances during the outdoor season, including a 16.61m jump at the Oregon Team Invitational in April where he also secured first place. But at the Big 12 Championships, Selva took another step forward.

His wind-aided 17.19m effort immediately became one of the biggest jumps ever produced by an Indian triple jumper under all conditions.

Even though the jump will not be officially recognised because the wind exceeded the allowable limit of +2.0 m/s, the mark still carries major significance technically. It demonstrates that Selva currently possesses the physical capability to consistently challenge beyond the 17-metre barrier something achieved by only a handful of Indian triple jumpers historically. Under all conditions, the jump places him joint-third among Indian triple jumpers.

More importantly, his legal personal best already stands at 17.05m from the 2026 NCAA Indoor Finals, proving that his recent performances are not isolated wind-assisted outliers.

That legal 17.05m itself established him among India’s elite triple jumpers at just 22 years of age.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Selva’s recent performances has been consistency. At the Big 12 Championships, he did not rely solely on one big jump. Alongside the 17.19m effort, he also recorded 16.90m with a +3.1 m/s wind reading. Producing multiple long jumps within the same competition often reflects technical stability rather than random explosive attempts.

That consistency becomes especially important in triple jump, one of athletics’ most technically demanding events. Unlike long jump, triple jump requires athletes to maintain rhythm and balance across three separate phases the hop, step, and jump while managing enormous impact forces through each landing.

Small technical breakdowns can significantly reduce distance. Selva’s recent results suggest his technical execution is improving rapidly.

Selva Prabhu first attracted international attention when he won silver at the 2022 World U20 Championships, becoming one of India’s brightest young athletics prospects. That result immediately positioned him as a long-term medal hopeful in a discipline where India has historically produced several strong jumpers at the Asian level but struggled for sustained global consistency.

Transitioning successfully from junior to senior athletics, however, is rarely straightforward. Many promising junior athletes struggle physically and technically once competing against stronger senior opposition. Selva’s steady progression through the NCAA system therefore becomes especially significant.

Instead of stagnating after junior success, he has continued improving year after year.

Selva’s development also reflects the growing importance of the NCAA pathway for Indian athletes. Competing in the American collegiate system provides athletes with high-quality infrastructure, regular elite competition, advanced sports science support, and exposure to pressure situations throughout the season.

For technical disciplines like triple jump, consistent access to world-class coaching and competition rhythm can dramatically accelerate development. Several Indian athletes across athletics disciplines have increasingly benefited from NCAA exposure over recent years, particularly in jumps and sprints. Selva now appears to be one of the strongest examples of that system producing genuine international-level progression.

With the Big 12 title secured, attention now shifts toward the NCAA Championships later this season. Winning an NCAA title remains one of the toughest achievements in collegiate athletics because of the extraordinary depth of competition across American universities. Notably, the last Indian triple jumper to win an NCAA title was Mohinder Singh Gill back in 1971.

That historical context adds further significance to Selva’s current season. Given his recent performances, he now enters the NCAA Championships as a serious contender rather than merely a participant.

Indian athletics has enjoyed major growth over the last decade, especially in throws and steeplechase, but triple jump has quietly started rebuilding momentum as well. Selva’s emergence provides India with another genuine international-level field athlete capable of competing beyond the continental stage. At 22, he still has considerable room for physical development and technical refinement. Most importantly, he is already consistently operating around the 17-metre mark—a distance associated with elite international competitiveness.

The outdoor season is still ongoing, and Selva’s performances suggest there could be even bigger jumps ahead under legal conditions. Breaking deeper into the 17.10m-17.20m legal range would place him firmly among Asia’s leading triple jumpers and strengthen his case for future global finals. For now, though, the Big 12 Championships provided another reminder of his growing potential.

Selva Prabhu Thirumaran is no longer simply a former junior medallist with promise. He is steadily becoming one of India’s most exciting field-event athletes on the international stage.
