India finish the Asian Games 2026 with 21 gold medals and four confirmed LA 2028 Olympic quotas through hockey and archery.

India concluded its Asian Games 2026 campaign in Aichi-Nagoya with 21 gold medals, with the men’s hockey team’s victory over Malaysia in the final providing the final boost to the country’s gold-medal tally.

Beyond the medals, India also secured qualification spots for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in four disciplines, underlining the importance of the Asian Games as a pathway to the next Olympic cycle. Five sports offered Olympic qualification opportunities at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games — hockey, archery, tennis, squash and surfing. India successfully converted those opportunities in hockey and archery.

The result is four confirmed Olympic quotas across the two sports.

Hockey delivers two Olympic quotas.

The Indian men’s hockey team secured its place at the Los Angeles Olympics by winning the Asian Games gold medal. India defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the men’s hockey final, successfully defending the title won at the previous Asian Games.

The victory was significant on two levels. It gave India another Asian Games hockey gold and ensured that the men’s team will return to the Olympic stage in Los Angeles in 2028.

India’s women’s hockey team had already secured the corresponding qualification spot by winning the women’s Asian Games title. The two hockey gold medals therefore translated directly into Olympic qualification for both Indian teams. It also meant India completed a historic double in Aichi-Nagoya, with both the men’s and women’s hockey teams winning Asian Games gold.

Archery provides two more pathways.

India’s other confirmed Olympic qualification spots came through archery. The women’s individual recurve event produced one of the most memorable results of the Games when Kumkum Mohod won the gold medal.

The Indian teenager defeated South Korea’s Yejin Oh in a dramatic final that went to a shoot-off. After the Korean shot an 8, Mohod needed only a 9 to win the gold but responded with a perfect 10. That victory secured an individual recurve quota for India for Los Angeles 2028.

Mohod’s achievement was particularly significant because it represented India’s first women’s individual recurve medal at the Asian Games, with the teenager taking gold. The second archery quota came from the compound mixed team event.

India’s Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav secured the qualification spot for the country, adding another Olympic pathway from Aichi-Nagoya.

Together, the two archery quotas give India representation in both an individual women’s recurve pathway and the compound mixed team qualification route.

Four confirmed quotas

India’s confirmed LA 2028 qualification spots from the Asian Games are:

  • Men’s hockey

  • Women’s hockey

  • Women’s individual recurve archery — Kumkum Mohod

  • Compound mixed team archery — Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav

These qualifications came from two of the five sports identified as offering Olympic quota opportunities at the Games. India did not secure qualification through tennis, squash or surfing according to the supplied information.

The significance of Aichi-Nagoya

The Asian Games serve as a critical continental benchmark, but the qualification opportunities attached to Aichi-Nagoya added another layer of importance for Indian athletes. The four quotas mean that several Indian athletes and teams have already secured their presence in the next Olympic cycle through their performances in Japan.

For hockey, the qualification was achieved through team success. For archery, it came through both individual and mixed-team performances. The combination reflects the breadth of India’s medal-winning campaign and the country's growing presence beyond traditional Olympic disciplines.

A 21-gold finish

India's campaign ended with 21 gold medals, with the men's hockey team providing the final gold of the Games by defeating Malaysia. The total caps an Asian Games campaign in which India produced major breakthroughs across several sports while also converting key qualification opportunities into Olympic quotas. The final hockey victory was particularly fitting.

India entered the Games with the men's and women's hockey teams among the country's strongest opportunities for both gold and Olympic qualification. Both teams delivered. Archery then added another significant chapter through Mohod's historic individual recurve triumph and the compound mixed team's qualification.

The road to Los Angeles begins now

With four LA 2028 Olympic quotas already secured, India's Olympic preparations can begin with greater clarity in these disciplines. The qualification spots do not represent the end of the journey. They provide the foundation for the next stage: selecting athletes, building teams and converting continental success into Olympic performance. For Kumkum Mohod, Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav, as well as India's men's and women's hockey teams, Aichi-Nagoya has therefore provided something more valuable than medals alone.

It has provided an early ticket to the next Olympic cycle. India leaves the 2026 Asian Games with 21 gold medals and four confirmed LA 2028 qualification spots.

The road to Los Angeles has already begun.
