India has announced a strong 48-member contingent for the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2026, set to be held in Hong Kong from May 28, with long jumper Shahnavaz Khan emerging as the headline name in a squad filled with promising young talent.

Selected by the Athletics Federation of India based on performances in domestic competitions, particularly the National Junior Federation Cup, the squad reflects both current form and long-term potential as India continues to build towards future Olympic cycles.

At the centre of India’s campaign is Shahnavaz Khan, whose remarkable leap of 8.23m at the National Junior Federation Cup in Karnataka not only secured him qualification but also set a new national U20 record. That performance has elevated him into one of India’s strongest medal contenders at the continental level.

The jump was significant not just in terms of distance, but also in consistency and execution key markers for success in international competition. With the Asian U20 Championships often serving as a stepping stone to senior success, Shahnavaz’s performance places him firmly in the spotlight.

India’s men’s contingent showcases depth across track and field events. In sprint and relay events, athletes like Rudra Sachin Shinde, Mohammed Ashfaq, and Piyush Raj will lead the charge. Ashfaq, in particular, stands out with his participation in the 400m as well as relay events, highlighting his versatility.

Middle-distance and endurance events feature names such as Venkatram Reddy Mogali (800m), Sandeep Yadav and Vikas Kumar (3000m), and Nikhil C in the 3000m steeplechase. In hurdles, Kiran Kunchan (110m hurdles) and Jashanpreet Singh and Amit Kumar (400m hurdles) will represent India. Field events remain a key strength area. Alongside Shahnavaz Khan in long jump, Jithin Arjunan Raman adds depth to the event, while Royshan Poorna Chandrasekar will compete in triple jump.

The throwing events include Nishchay (discus), Ashuvendra Pratap Singh and Aman (hammer throw), and Ashish Yadav (javelin), indicating a balanced representation across disciplines.

The women’s team reflects India’s growing strength in junior athletics, particularly in sprints and relays. Nipam and Bhumika Sanjay Nehate will feature in sprint events as well as relay combinations, while Neeru Pathak and Tahura Khutan will compete in the 400m and contribute to relay squads. In endurance events, Muskan will represent India in the 5000m, while Mansi Avinash Yadav and Aisha Verma have been selected for the 3000m steeplechase.

Field events also offer medal potential.

Pooja, a national record holder and Asian Indoor Championships medallist, will lead India’s challenge in high jump. Sadhana Ravi (triple jump), Amanat Kamboj (discus throw), and Poonam (javelin throw) further strengthen the lineup.

India’s relay squads across both men’s and women’s categories remain a major area of focus. The inclusion of multiple athletes in 4x100m, 4x400m, and mixed relay events indicates a strategic emphasis on team events, where India has historically performed well at the Asian level.

Relay events often provide opportunities to maximise medal prospects, especially when individual performances can be complemented by strong team coordination. The squad selection was based strictly on performances in domestic competitions, underlining a merit-driven approach. The National Junior Federation Cup continues to play a crucial role in identifying talent, offering athletes a competitive platform to prove their readiness for international events.

This system ensures that athletes enter continental competitions with recent match fitness and performance momentum. India has consistently improved its standing at the Asian U20 level over the past decade, with junior athletes increasingly transitioning successfully into senior ranks. The current squad reflects this upward trajectory.

The diversity of events from sprints and middle distance to jumps and throws indicates a more balanced development structure compared to earlier years, when strength was concentrated in select disciplines. The Asian U20 Athletics Championships are more than just a standalone competition. They serve as a critical platform for athletes aiming to break into the senior circuit, with performances here often influencing selection for future international events.

For India, the focus extends beyond immediate medals. This squad represents the next generation of athletes who could form the core of India’s teams for major events in the 2030 and 2036 Olympic cycles.

With Shahnavaz Khan leading the charge and a well-rounded squad across disciplines, India enters the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2026 with strong expectations. The combination of record-breaking performances, emerging talent, and structured selection provides a solid foundation.

The challenge now lies in translating domestic success into international results a step that will define not just this campaign, but the future trajectory of Indian athletics.
