Asian Games 2026 Could Send Indian Athletes Straight to LA 2028 Olympics: 12 Quotas Up for Grabs
The Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya will be about much more than continental medals for India. For several Indian athletes and teams, the continental showpiece could also provide a direct route to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The Asian Games will be held from September 19 to October 4, and athletes from across the continent will compete not only for podium finishes but also for opportunities that could shape their Olympic journeys.
While qualification for LA 2028 will largely depend on world rankings, world championships and dedicated Olympic qualification tournaments across different sports, four disciplines offer Indian athletes a particularly significant opportunity at the Asian Games.
Archery, hockey, squash and tennis will have Olympic quotas available through performances in Aichi-Nagoya, with as many as 12 potential quota places up for grabs for India.
The biggest opportunity comes in archery.
Archery offers India the most Olympic quota opportunities.
Archery will have six possible LA 2028 quota pathways available at the Asian Games, making it the sport with the highest number of Olympic qualification opportunities for India.
In men's individual recurve, both the gold and silver medallists will earn one Olympic quota each for their respective National Olympic Committees. The same system will apply in women's individual recurve, meaning two men's and two women's individual quotas can be secured through the Asian Games. The recurve mixed team champions will also earn an Olympic quota for LA 2028.
There is an additional historic opportunity in compound archery. The compound mixed team event will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, and the champions at the Asian Games 2026 will secure a quota for their country.
That means India could potentially secure up to six Olympic quota places through archery alone: two men's individual recurve quotas, two women's individual recurve quotas, one recurve mixed team quota and one compound mixed team quota.
India will head into the competition with considerable strength. Olympian Dhiraj Bommadevara and three-time Asian Games gold medallist Jyothi Surekha Vennam are part of India's 12-member squad, providing the team with experience and medal-winning pedigree across the different events.
However, the qualification system comes with an important distinction. The quotas belong to the National Olympic Committees rather than individual athletes. This means an athlete who wins the quota does not automatically secure their personal place at LA 2028, with the country retaining the right to select eligible athletes for the Olympic Games.
Asian Games gold could unlock Olympic hockey qualification.
For India's men's and women's hockey teams, the equation is relatively straightforward. The champions of the men's and women's hockey competitions at the Asian Games will earn an Olympic quota for their respective National Olympic Committees, provided they have not already qualified through another route.
If the gold medal-winning team has already secured qualification, the Olympic quota will pass to the next highest-placed team in the continental event that has not yet qualified. No Asian team has qualified for the LA 2028 Olympics through the available hockey qualification pathways so far, making the Asian Games a potentially decisive tournament for India's men and women.
The United States has already qualified as a host. Belgium's men and the Netherlands' women have also secured their Olympic places after winning the 2025-26 FIH Hockey Pro League.
For India, Asian Games gold could therefore provide a direct route to Los Angeles.
Harmanpreet Singh is set to lead India's men's team, while Salima Tete will captain the women's side. Both teams will enter Aichi-Nagoya knowing that a continental title could have consequences far beyond an Asian Games medal.
Squash gets its first Olympic moment.
The Asian Games 2026 will also carry special significance for squash. The sport is set to make its long-awaited Olympic debut at LA 2028, and the Asian Games will offer one of the first major qualification opportunities. The men's singles champion and women's singles champion in Aichi-Nagoya will each earn an Olympic quota for their country.
For India, the opportunity comes at an exciting time for the sport. Asian Games bronze medallists Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh will lead the eight-member Indian squad. The men's singles champion and women's singles champion will each earn an Olympic quota for their respective countries. However, there is an important requirement. The athlete must be ranked inside the world's top 500 in singles at the relevant qualification cut-off date of June 12, 2028.
For India, the squad includes Olympian Sumit Nagal, Sriram Balaji and doubles specialist Yuki Bhambri. While the Olympic quota on offer is specifically linked to singles competition, India's experienced players will bring valuable international exposure to the Asian Games campaign. The road to LA 2028 will still be long, but the Asian Games offers an early opportunity to secure a major advantage.
For Indian athletes, the Asian Games has traditionally been one of the most important events on the sporting calendar. In 2026, however, the stakes will be even higher.
